Sonia Gandhi postpones AICC session

The Congress plenary session, scheduled to be held at Bangalore from February 14 to 16, has been postponed in view of the devastating earthquake in Gujarat, party president Sonia Gandhi announced on Sunday.

In a statement, she said a new date for the session will be announced later.

Gandhi announced the decision a day after she visited the quake affected areas in Gujarat.

"I was deeply saddened to see the unprecedented devastation" caused by the quake, she said. It was a great national calamity and the entire country should rise to the occasion and provide succour to the affected.

"I have decided to postpone the plenary session of the Congress party scheduled to take place from February14 to 16 in Bangalore. A new date for the session will be announced later," she said.

The session was called after the organisational elections in which Gandhi was elected as party chief by a massive margin.

The Congress president urged party workers to contribute generously towards the relief work through the AICC treasurer or the Rajiv Gandhi National Relief and Welfare Trust.

She also asked the party workers of nearby states to visit the affected areas and provide maximum assistance to the suffering people in coordination with pradesh and district Congress committees.
