Sonia leaves for Gujarat: PTI

Congress President Sonia Gandhi left New Delhi for Gujarat, to assess the situation in the state rocked by the devastating earthquake.

Gandhi has despatched a high-level three-member party team consisting of Ahmed Patel, R K Dhawan and Pawan Bansal to assess the extent of damage to properties and report back to her so that effective relief measures could be expedited, party sources said.

The Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha had also asked Congress-ruled states, Pradesh Congress Committees and partymen across the country to immediately rush relief material to the quake-hit state, which was yet to recover from the severe drought.

She is in touch with chief ministers of her party-ruled states and PCC presidents to expedite relief materials to Gujarat, sources said.
