Gujarat experiences 53 aftershocks

Onkar Singh in New Delhi

The Meteorological Department of India -- the nodal agency for monitoring earthquakes -- has registered 53 aftershocks in Gujarat since the devastating earthquake struck the state and other parts of India at 0846 hours IST on January 26.

According to the department, these shocks registered between 2.8 to 5.3 on the Richter scale, with the first aftershock -- measuring 5.3 -- being recorded at 0903 hours, barely 15 minutes after the quake.

These shocks, say experts, may have caused further damage to life and property in Bhuj, closest to the epicentre of the quake.
