Srichand Hinduja interrogated, brothers sent back

Onkar Singh in New Delhi

The Hinduja brothers finally turned up at the Central Bureau of Investigation office at 1500 hours IST on Saturday, an hour after the time fixed for their appearance by the special Central Bureau of Investigation special court hearing the Bofors payoffs case.

The three arrived to a huge media turnout, which had pulled out all stops to record what promises to be a significant development. A phalanx of foreign and local media thronged the CBI office and the brothers allowed themselves to be photographed, and even paused to exchange pleasantries with some journalists.

Their appearance was preceded by moments of uncertainty as rumours gained ground that they had moved a court application against interrogation by the CBI. Officials accompanying the brothers, however, told the media that they have "no intentions of moving another court or to block investigations".

"We are co-operating with the agency," they insisted.

However, the CBI, it was clear, had other ideas. Preferring to interrogate the three separately, the agency detained Srichand Hinduja while the other two, Gopichand and Prakashchand, were sent back.
