Allahabad native objects to media coverage of Mela

Prem Panicker in Kumbh Nagar

A two-man Bench at the Allahabad high court comprising Chief Justice A K Sen and Justice S R Aalam heard a public interest litigation filed by Rajeev Ratan Shukla, a native of Allahabad.

The petitioner objected to the media -- both Indian and international -- shooting stills and videos of the Naga sadhus and women taking a dip at the Sangam.

The petition also pointed out that the Sangam bath was being covered live on some television channels. The petition says this is a violation of Rule 18 of the United Provinces Mela Rule, which specifically prohibits possibly prurient pictures being disseminated through the media.

The Mela authorities have been asked to file a response before the judges on Wednesday.
