Cox and Kings moves SC against HC order

Tour operator Cox and Kings has filed an appeal before the Supreme Court against an Allahabad High Court order to remove their 74 tent houses from the Kumbh mela premises near Jhusi, where they are hosting foreign tourists.

Company co-ordinator Lakshmi Singh Tikari on Tuesday said, ''We had moved the Supreme Court on Monday, and we are expecting a hearing in the apex court on Tuesday.''

The Allahabad High Court had given its ruling last week on a public interest litigation seeking eviction of Cox and Kings from Sector 9 of the mela premises for 'causing damage to the Indian culture and tradition'.

The court had set a January 16 deadline for the company to vacate the premises.

The Cox and Kings controversy had cropped up when the Akhara Parishad had objected to their operations.

However, 14 of the 26 members of the Parishad had inspected the company's set-up on Monday evening and given a no-objection letter, Tikari claimed.

The 14 members had expressed their inability to give an assurance on behalf of the remaining 12 members of the Akhara Parishad, she added.
