J&K police given transit remand of Hashim Qureshi

Onkar Singh in New Delhi

The Jammu and Kashmir police on Thursday was granted transit remand of hijacker Hashim Qureshi by additional chief metropolitan magistrate V K Maheshwari till January 14.

The magistrate directed the state police to produce Qureshi before the appropriate court in Srinagar on or before January 14.

The judge also allowed Qureshi's plea to release some of his personal belongings, including his clothes and medicines, forthwith and directed the Tihar jail superintendent to keep Qureshi in safe custody till the J&K police is able to make security arrangements to fly him to Srinagar.

Speaking to rediff.com, Qureshi said he had come to India to help the Indian authorities in their peace efforts in Kashmir. "I fully support the prime minister's initiative to restore peace in J&K, and that is the reason why I came to India after 30 years."

"Unfortunately, the Indian system has not treated me well. While the two Sikh hijackers were let off within 24 hours of their coming to India after serving a sentence in Pak jails, different treatment has been meted out to me," he said.

"I have served a sentence for the same offence in Pakistan, so I don't know why I am being prosecuted here."

Qureshi also told rediff.com, "I support the Hurriyat's initiative to hold talks with Pakistan and put an end to the killings in Kashmir."

Qureshi's entire family flew in from J&K early on Thursday morning to be with him. Aslam, his younger brother, told rediff.com that Qureshi is very upset at his treatment in jail.

Meanwhile, R P Sharma, the DSP, CID of J&K police, has arrived in Delhi to take charge of the Qureshi.

The team will be flying out either on Friday or Saturday, depending on the circumstances and the weather conditions in Delhi and Srinagar .
