Bharat Shah discharged from J J hospital

Film financier and leading diamond trader Bharat Shah was discharged from Sir J J Hospital late on Tuesday night where he had been admitted following complaints of acute chest pain.

The film financier, who had been arrested and subsequently remanded for his alleged links with underworld don Chhota Shakeel was later whisked away by the sleuths of the Crime Branch for further interrogation, police sources said.

Shah, whose arrest had sent shockwaves down the film industry and the diamond market where he holds large investments, had earlier reported that he had no links with the underworld and that the money invested in the film Chori Chori Chupke Chupke was his own.

Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, Police Commissioner M N Singh on said the sources of Shah's funds would be probed. He, however clarified that there were no investigations pertaining to affairs of the stock market or the diamond market.

He also categorically stated that no ongoing projects in which Shah had invested money would be affected, unless it was proved that the projects were connected with the underworld.

Meanwhile, in an advertisement issued in Bombay, the diamond industry on Wednesday urged the media to refrain from indulging in sensationalism and report objectively after verifying the facts.

The ad further said, the industry was distressed to learn about the arrest of Bharat Shah, country's largest diamond exporters.

"He has been upholding this distinction for the last 15 years and has been honoured with the National Trophy by the Indian and the state governments," the ad said.
