Syed Ahmed Bukhari to form Muslim party

Syed Ahmed Bukhari, Shahi Imam of Delhi's Jama Masjid, is considering setting up a political outfit that will fight for the rights of Muslims in India.

The Shahi Imam, who is in Dubai on a private visit along with his family, said he planned to convene a meeting of Muslim leaders from all over the country after February 15 to know their views on the proposed formation of the outfit.

''Muslims have supported almost every political party in the country but got nothing in return. Every one of these parties has only exploited them,'' he said.

Bukhari said the Muslims would have to unite and consolidate their vote to secure their rights. ''When Dalits, Yadavs, Sikhs and Hindus can have their parties, why can't Muslims form a party? Why should there be any hue and cry over it?'' he wondered.

The Shahi Imam said the Muslims could no longer trust any political party because each one of them had treated them like a vote bank.

In this connection, he launched a scathing attack on Samajwadi Party president Mulayam Singh Yadav, saying that the Muslims did everything for Yadav, but when it came to doing something for the community, he gave Rajya Sabha (Upper House) seats to people like Sakshi Maharaj.
