Tension gripped Jarginaju village under Raikia block of Kandhamal district in Orissa after a newly built church was vandalised by some miscreants on Sunday night, police said.

The Baptist church was to be inaugurated on January 13.

According to the first information report lodged with the police, the miscreants smashed the cross atop the church and damaged the asbestos roof. The marble plaque inside was also broken.

Police have registered a case under sections 295, 379 and 427 of the Indian Penal Code and are investigating the incident. No arrests have been made yet.
