Cong calls for ceasefire with ULFA

The Congress in Assam Friday demanded that a ceasefire be declared in the state as was done in Kashmir and Nagaland.

A Assam Pradesh Congress Committe release said a composite dialogue is the only way to deal with the insurgency in the state, and a ceasefire with the United Liberation Front of Asom is a pre-requisite for this.

The ceasefire declared in Kashmir and Nagaland could serve as a model for dealing with ULFA rebels in Assam, the APCC said.

"Army deployment is like anti-biotics. Too much of it has proved harmful," the release said.

The party has accused the Asom Gana Parishad-led coalition government in the state of being involved in "secret killings."

The Congress alleged there was flagrant violation of human rights and innocent people were being targeted in the state.
