Gunmen kill relatives of militants in Assam

GUWAHATI (AFP) - Unidentified gunmen on Thursday shot dead three people, including two family members of a top United Liberation Front of Assam leader.

A police spokesman said gunmen entered the house of Raju Baruah - deputy military chief of the outlawed United Liberation Front of Assam - in Nalbari district in western Assam just before dawn.

"They rounded up two relatives of the ULFA leader and shot them at close range," the spokesman said by telephone from Nalbari.

The victims were the brother-in-law and nephew of the ULFA leader.

In another incident in the same district, gunmen shot dead a close relative of another ULFA cadre.

Police said the attacks appeared to be in retaliation to the killing, by suspected ULFA cadre, of three surrendered ULFA members on Wednesday.

At least 50 surrendered ULFA militants have been killed in the past three years, while more than 20 family members of top ULFA leaders have also been shot dead.
