Bharatiya Janata Party president Bangaru Laxman's letter to Dr J K Jain, verbatim. D Jain's reply to Laxman, verbatim

Dear Dr Jain

You were kind enough to call on me yesterday (2.1.2001). I had advised you not to precipitate any action as matter could be discussed and solution found. You said you would consult.

Today I am given to understand that you have sent a lawyer notice to the respected Prime Minister.

I consider this as a step that is not to be taken even by a primary member of the party let alone by a member of National Executive. I therefore regret to inform you that you will no longer be a member of National Executive of the party and hence any invitation to you to attend the National Executive on 4th and 5th instant stands withdrawn with immediate effect.

Yours sincerely,

Bangaru Laxman

Respected Bangaru Laxman

Thank you for your communication dated 3rd January 2001, delivered at my residence at 10 pm. It reminds me of the midnight missive of the 1969 vintage when such letters were delivered in the dark hours between the late Mrs Indira Gandhi and late Mr Nijalingappa.

Even though it is the Party President's power to keep a nominated member in the National Executive, but when such powers are exercised for a cause, and the cause is the desire of a Member of the National Executive to vindicate his honour by recourse to a Court of Law, the type of notice you have sent to me through your above referred communication, amounts to contempt of the judicial process.

I would request you to write a simple letter without mentioning the cause and to withdraw this letter under reference, so that I am not compelled to initiate any contempt proceedings.

I am writing to you in the interest of the Party, to serve which it is not necessary that I continue as Member of the National Executive. But if the course I have suggested does not meet your approval, I will be constrained most reluctantly to uphold the rule of Law and most reluctantly take such legal step which you have invited.

With Kind Regards
Yours Sincerely
Dr J K Jain
