Uphaar tragedy judgment
deferred till Feb 27

Onkar Singh in New Delhi

District and Sessions Judge Mamata Sehgal on Thursday deferred the delivering of judgment on framing charges against the accused in the Uphaar cinema fire tragedy till February 27.

Noted property dealer Sushil Ansal and several others are accused in the Uphaar tragedy and they have been charged with causing death of 59 cinemagoers by negligence.

Apart from those killed, over 150 people injured when a fire broke out at the Uphaar cinema hall in New Delhi on June 13, 1997.

Neelam Krishnamurthi, who lost her children in the tragedy and was present in the court, told rediff.com that she was disappointed that the wheels of justice were moving so slowly.

"Three years and 10 months after the Uphaar tragedy, charges are yet to be framed. I wonder when will the entire case will come to an end," said Krishnamurthi.

Earlier the Delhi High Court disposed off the petition of the Uphaar victims by saying that since the district and sessions judge has already reserved her order on the framing of charges, it had no further role to play.
