One militant killed, 7 arrested in Assam

The army apprehended seven separatist militants, while a Bodo ultra was killed in an encounter during the past two days.

According to official sources, the army launched an operation Sunday night on a tip off about presence of militants belonging to the National Democratic Front of Bodoland near the Sankosh river in Kokrajhar district.

On being challenged, the militants fired and attempted to flee. The troops retaliated and in the cross-fire, one militant was killed and another apprehended.

Sources said the slain militant was a hardcore NDFB activist. Two 12 bore rifles with ammunition and a crude bomb were recovered from them.

On Saturday night, during a search operation, one nine mm revolver with ammunition was recovered from Chepti village near Rangiya town in lower Assam's Kamrup district. In another incident in Darrang district, NDFB harbourer Jogen Basumatary was apprehended from Nagara Chara village.

Meanwhile, in Sonitpur district, five militants involved in business of illicit liqour were apprehended on February 17. Huge quantity of the liqour was confiscated from the apprehended ultras.
