Police firing in Asthawan constituency: PTI

Police opened fire, following an attempt by anti-socials to grab a booth in Asthawan assembly constituency in Bihar, where bye-elections are being held on Monday.

Director General of Police R R Prasad said 15 anti-socials fired outside booth 162 at Mohni village in Asthawan, in an apparent bid to loot ballots or grab the booth.

A police party led by Deputy Police Superintendent S C Jha returned fire and chased them away.

None was injured in the incident, he said.

Prasad said polling was by and large peaceful in other areas in Asthawan, where bypolls were necessitated following the death of Independent legislator R P Sharma.

An estimated 35 to 40 per cent voters cast their ballots till 14:30 hours IST, he said.

Monday's polling will decide the fate of 18 contestants, including Satish Kumar (Samata Party), Kumar Pushpanjay (Rashtriya Janata Dal), Arun Kumar Singh (Lok Jana Shakti) and Tripurari Prasad (Independent).
