ITBP jawan killed in grenade attack

A correspondent in Srinagar

A soldier was killed and five others injured when militants launched a rifle grenade attack on the Indo-Tibetan Border Police camp at Bemina, uptown Srinagar, on Monday morning.

Jawan Rattan Ram was killed on the spot in the early morning attack by militants, while the five who were grievously injured have since been rushed to hospital.

The authorities have rushed reinforcements to the spot and have also launched search operations in the area.

The Jaish-e-Mohammad, floated by Maulana Masood Azhar, released by India in 1999 in 1999 along with two other militants in lieu of the passengers aboard the hijacked Indian Airlines Airbus, has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Elsewhere in the Kashmir valley, militants shot dead a policeman attached to the Criminal Investigation Department, Nazir Ahmed, at Pattan in Baramulla district, sources said.

A surrendered militant working with the forest department, Mohammad Yousuf Malik, was shot dead by militants in his house in Turkapora-Dragmullah in Kupwara district.

Police arrested Special Police Officer Javid Ahmad after he complained that his loaded AK rifle, which he had with him while playing cricket, was snatched away, the sources said.
