Corbett Park to remain open for tourists
during search for poachers

Reversing their earlier decision to close the Jim Corbett National Park for tourists from Tuesday, authorities have now decided to let it remain open during the search for poachers.

Only the Bijrani area of the reserve has been closed to visitors, said R S Tolia, Principal Secretary (Forests), Uttaranchal.

The decision was taken at a high-level meeting held on Monday to chalk out a strategy to nab the poachers who have killed five tuskers at the Park since the past one-and-a-half month. The Uttaranchal government has announced a reward of Rs 100,000 for anyone giving information on the poachers.

At the meeting, Tolia said if tourists were stopped from visiting the Park, the poachers would get a free hand. The presence of people in the area will hinder their 'activity'.

On Friday, an Elephant carcass was found in the Paterpani area of the Park's Kalagarh forest range. The partly-devoured carcass was without tusks.

Combing operation is on in the 1,210 sq. km of the Park. Kalagarh, Jhirna and Dhela ranges of the Park and the Sonanadi area have been declared sensitive.

PAC personnel and police have been posted in the Park in strength as part of the combing operation. Three PAC battalions are from Uttaranchal, while one is from Bijnore.
