Coal minister manhandled at Dhanbad

Union Coal Minister (Independent charge) Shahanwaz Hussain was manhandled by agitated miners and relatives of deceased workers at Bagdigi in Dhanbad on Saturday.

Hussain was manhandled after he came out of the mine and was returning to meet Bharat Coking Coal Limited officials.

The agitated workers stopped his car and started shouting slogans against the local authorities and police, for their indifferent attitude in rescue operations.

Hussain came out of his car to pacify the agitators, but as soon as he stepped out, they manhandled him. Hussain's bodyguards immediately whisked him away.

The workers were agitated with the slow pace of recovering bodies of the victims.

Thirty miners were trapped in the Bagdigi coal mine on February 2. Only one miner survived.

Media persons were earlier beaten up by the Dhanbad police, as they insisted on entering the mine with Hussain. They claimed that BCCL officials were hiding the truth.

The policemen were apparently irked as Jharkhand Chief Minister Babulal Marandi fell following a stampede caused by the mediapersons when he had arrived at Bagdigi earlier.

Hussain assured the media that he had spoken to Marandi, to ensure action against those responsible for the attack.
