Rescued miner gains consciousness

Salim Ansari, who was rescued from the flooded Bagdigi mine near Dhanbad in Jharkhand early on Thursday, has regained consciousness.

Ansari was trapped inside the water-logged colliery for six days and was unconscious when he was brought out. Ansari regained consciousness on the way to a hospital in Dhanbad.

Reports said Ansari was happy to be alive, but is barely able to speak. Doctors said he is highly traumatised and may not be able to assist rescue workers looking for his colleagues immediately.

"Ansari remembers his name but is in a highly traumatised state. He is being given oxygen and has been administered glucose," a source said.

Hordes of people thronged the hospital compound as word spread like wildfire through the colliery colonies about Ansari's miraculous survival.
