Demolition man takes up rehabilitation work

The dreaded demolition man of yesteryears, whose name sent a chill down the spine of encroachers, is now at the helm of the rehabilitation and reconstruction work in quake-devastated Bhuj.

The new Collector Anil Mukhim, had demolished several illegal structures during his tenure as municipal commissioner in 1989.

Residents of this commercial town of Kutch district have not forgotten the way he cleared encroachments with alacrity. He was even accused of using terror tactics by those whose encroached portions were razed by the municipal bulldozers.

He had demolished 700 encroachments in five days in 1989, recalls a resident.

The 39-year-old Mukhim, who was brought in to assume charge two days after Union Home Minister L K Advani visited the area last Thursday, does not brook any political influence and is now working to evolve a system to regulate relief material brought in by hundreds of NGOs.

Mukhim succeeds Kamal Dayani, who was transferred amidst reports of poor handling of the relief and rescue operations. He even instructed officials during the recent visit of the prime minister to the affected areas not to relax on relief work under the pretext of security requirements.
