Senior Congress leader V N Gadgil dead

Our Correspondent in New Delhi

Former Union minister and senior Congress leader V N Gadgil passed away early Tuesday morning following a cardiac arrest. He was 71.

Gadgil breathed his last at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi.

Family sources said his body would be kept in Delhi for a day before being moved to Pune for the last rites.

Gadgil, who represented Pune in the Lok Sabha for several terms, handled various ministries in the Union cabinet. He was the information and broadcasting minister in the Rajiv Gandhi cabinet and served as minister of state for defence and communications during the prime ministership of Indira Gandhi.

Gadgil also held several important positions in the Congress when the party was led by Indira Gandhi and then after her death by Rajiv Gandhi.

A staunch loyalist of the Gandhi family, Gadgil withdrew from active politics because of ill health after Sonia Gandhi became the president.
