Tapkara firing death toll rises to six: PTI

The death toll following Friday's police firing at Tapkara rose to six, with another death being reported, official sources said in Ranchi on Saturday.

A person died on way to the Rajendra Medical College and Hospital late on Friday night, Ranchi Deputy Commissioner Sukhdeo Singh stated.

Five persons died on the spot and four were injured when police opened fire to control a mob, which torched the Tapkara police outpost and some police vehicles on Friday afternoon.

About 24 policemen were injured in brick-batting and three of them were being treated at the RMCH. Their condition was stated to be stable.

Ranchi senior superintendent of police Neeraj Sinha said the situation in Tapkara and Torpa was tense but under control. A large contingent of police and Rapid Action Force jawans was deployed in the areas, he said.

The mob, consisting of people from adjoining Torpa, was angry with the police for raids in their villages on Thursday, as part of combing operations against ultras allegedly violating a 'janata curfew' imposed in the area.

Fearing large-scale displacement, the villagers were against the 750 mw Koel-Karo hydel project and imposed a 'curfew' around the project area, in 1995, to stall its inauguration.

During raids, policemen broke some barricades put up in the area by the Koel-Karo Janasangathan, spearheading the agitation against the project. "This seems to have enraged the villagers," Jharkhand DGP T P Sinha said.
