Panic spreads as stars foretell bigger quake on Feb 3

Sheela Bhatt in Bhuj

Panic is spreading across Gujarat as the supposed Doom Day, February 3, nears its dawn.

Several publications in Gujarat have been circulating stories based on astrologers' predictions that more powerful tremors would rip the state asunder on Saturday February 3.

Sandesh, a popular Gujarati publication, quoted astrologer Ambalal Patel as saying that the Saturday quake's magnitude will exceed the Republic Day quake's.

Aaj Kal, a daily published from Rajkot, had published a similar report in December 2000, quoting astrologer Liliya as saying that January 26, 2001 will ravage Gujarat. His prediction, as it transpired, proved accurate. And how!

The administration is seeking to discount these predictions in its bid to contain the panic.

However, the quake aftermath has made people susceptible to rumours of all kinds.
