Census operations may be affected in 4 Gujarat districts

Census operations in four districts of Gujarat - Kutch, Rajkot, Jamnagar and Surendranagar - may be affected because of the unprecedented loss of life and property in the Republic Day quake.

However, the census operations will commence as slated on February 9 in the other 21 districts of the quake-ravaged state, official home ministry sources said on Thursday.

Census Commissioner J K Banthia along with the Registrar General of India held meetings with the census officers in Gujarat earlier this week to review the position.

The sources said the position in four districts was under review and would be decided in a day or two -- before the second phase begins on February 9. The first phase of house listing operations was completed last September. The second phase is scheduled to continue till February 28 and the reference date of Census 2001 is 0000 hrs (midnight) on March 1.
