Commission to probe Punjab rail mishap

Tara Shankar Sahay in New Delhi

The Union Cabinet decided on Thursday evening to appoint a commission of inquiry headed by Justice S Saghir Ahmed, a retired judge of the Supreme Court, to probe the train collision in Punjab on December 2, 2000.

Forty-six persons were killed and more than 140 injured when the Amritsar-bound Howrah Mail rammed into the derailed wagons of a special goods train carrying foodgrain on the Ambala-Ludhiana section of the Northern Railway.

Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pramod Mahajan told reporters that with this decision, the Cabinet had fulfilled Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee's promise to Parliament in the winter session to institute a judicial inquiry into the accident.
