No immediate plans to ban PTV: Government

Despite the chill in Indo-Pak ties, the government on Saturday ruled out any immediate plans of banning Pakistan TV, but said the channel was being monitored to see what kind of disinformation campaign was being carried out against India.

Information and Broadcasting Minister Sushma Swaraj told reporters that while the Centre had the powers to ban any TV channel, it did not want to be arbitrary.

She said inputs from the external affairs ministry would also be taken into consideration in this regard. Besides, the Cabinet Committee on Security was also meeting regularly.

Noting that there was also a committee of senior officials with representatives from the home, defence, external affairs and I&B ministries to look into such issues, she said that a decision would be taken at an approriate time.

When asked about reports of PTV being banned in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, she said the local authorities, too, had the power to ban any channel.

Replying to a question on whether there were any plans to ban the Temptation Island series on Star World, she said the programme was being monitored and she was awaiting a report from the joint secretary (broadcasting).
