J&K police reject Thane
police's claim on Hamza

Onkar Singh in New Delhi

The Jammu and Kashmir police have denied Thane police chief S M Shangari's claim that Abu Hamza, one of the five terrorists involved in the attack on Parliament, was arrested in Thane in 1990 and handed over to the J&K police.

"I can tell you that the claim made by the Thane police is totally false. No terrorist by the name Abu Hamza was handed over to the Jammu and Kashmir police last year," Inspector General of Police (Kashmir range) K Rajendran told rediff.com on the phone from Srinagar.

He said Hamza is a common Muslim name often used by terrorists as an alias.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (special branch, Delhi) Ashok Chand, who heads the probe into the attack on Parliament, has backed the Jammu and Kashmir police on this count.

"The terrorist named Hamza killed in Delhi on December 13 was definitely different from the one Thane police claim to have arrested last year," Chand said.

Meanwhile, a joint team of Delhi and Jammu and Kashmir police is conducting raids in the border state in a bid to nab Gazi Baba, Lashkar-e-Tayiba's chief commander in India.
