India welcomes LTTE ceasefire

Tara Shankar Sahay in New Delhi

India on Thursday welcomed the declaration of a month-long unilateral cease-fire in Sri Lanka by the separatist Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam and hoped that this would mark the beginning of a process that would restore peace in the island nation.

External affairs ministry spokeswoman Nirupama Rao said Sri Lanka's new prime minister, Ranil Wickremesinghe, would be visiting India for two days beginning Saturday, December 22.

During his visit, Wickremesinghe will meet President K R Narayanan, Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and other political leaders.

Lanka's Foreign Minister Tyronne Fernando would accompany Wickremesinghe on the visit, she added.
