Coffin scam rocks Parliament, Houses adjourned

An agitated Opposition on Wednesday forced the adjournment of both Houses of Parliament for an hour on the issue of the Comptroller and Auditor General's report on defence deals, including procurement of caskets for Kargil martyrs.

As soon as the Lok Sabha assembled for the day, opposition members were on their feet demanding the resignation of Defence Minister George Fernandes for his alleged involvement in murky purchases of coffins for soldiers killed during the Kargil conflict.

They shouted slogans: coffin chor, gaddi chhod, even as Speaker G M C Balayogi requested them to take their seats.

With the members in an unrelenting mood, he adjourned the House for an hour.

Similar scenes were witnessed in Rajya Sabha forcing Chairman Krishan Kant to adjourn the House.
