Khonglam to form new government in Meghalaya

Dr Flinder Anderson Khonglam, leader of the People's Forum of Meghalaya, was formally invited on Saturday by Acting Governor Arvind Dave to form the new government in the state, Raj Bhavan sources said.

Khonglam will be sworn in as chief minister at 1900 IST.

Earlier, E K Mawlong, who was voted out of power on the floor of the assembly, submitted his resignation to Dave.

Khonglam, a Nationalist Congress Party minister in the Mawlong government and a loyalist of the party's national general secretary, Purno A Sangma, was elected leader of the PFM on November 27, the day the 42-member forum was formed.

Mawlong, whose minority government was defeated in a voice vote in the House on Friday, sent his resignation letter through the leader of the United Democratic Party in the assembly, H B Dan, and deputy leader Dr Donkuper Roy as he is unwell.

Two Bharatiya Janata Party legislators, A L Hek and N N Simchang, accompanied Dan and Roy.

Hek had resigned as minister for art and culture and Simchang from the chairmanship of the Meghalaya Industrial Development Corporation on November 12, along with T H Rangad as home minister, in protest against the Meghalaya House scandal in Calcutta. They had then demanded Mawlong's resignation over the controversial deal.
