Hamid Karzai is an alumni of Himachal university

Hamid Karzai, the westernised Afghan Pushtoon chosen to head the interim government in post-Taliban Afghanistan, has an India connection.

Karzai obtained his Masters degree in Political Science from the Himachal University in Shimla in the early 1980s.

"Hamid was a suave and handsome boy with a liberal outlook," reminisces the Pushtoon leader's teacher Prof A R Khan, who has now retired from the university.

Khan recalls that Karzai often used to come to his house and discuss at length Afghan polity and politics.

Khan said he belongs to the Yusuf tribe of Afghanistan and 'we therefore developed a natural affinity towards each other'.

Khan hopes that Karzai would be pro-India as he has always been opposed to the Taliban.
