No country can use our military bases: Govt

The government on Wednesday ruled out extending accessibility to Indian military and naval bases to any foreign country though joint exercises with countries were a continuing process.

Replying to a spate of supplementary queries during Question Hour in the Lok Sabha, External Affairs Minister Jaswant Singh said, "Military bases are not accessible to any foreign country and the country will not enter into any military alliance nor will the army serve under any flag except that of the United Nations."

On Afghanistan, he said, India does not support the presence of any element of the Taliban, including the so-called moderates, in any government in Kabul.

It is generally agreed that for peace and stability to return in that country, it is essential to ensure the establishment of a broad-based independent government with representation from all ethnic groups, he said.

India has also participated in several multilateral efforts aimed at restoration of peace, stability and reconstruction in Afghanistan, he added.

To a question on the post-Taliban fallout in Jammu and Kashmir, he said the government is aware of the situation arising from this development and the concerned ministries, like home and defence, are taking necessary steps to contain the situation.
