Prayer meetings, rally marks Bhopal gas leak anniversary

A number of programmes, including an all-religion prayer meetings and burning of effigies of Warren Anderson, the then chairman of the Union Carbide, marked the observance of the 17th anniversary of gas disaster in Bhopal on Monday.

Madhya Pradesh Governor Dr Bhai Mahavir led the main all-religion prayer meeting at the premises of the Union Carbide plant in J P Nagar area from where the lethal Methyl Isocyanate gas had leaked on the night of December 2-3, 1984, claiming thousands of lives and affecting several thousands.

State minister for Gas Relief and Rehabilitation Arif Aqeel, senior BJP MLA Babulal Gaur and Bhopal Mayor Vibha Patel attended the meeting.

Bhopal Gas Peedit Mahila Udyog Sangthan, the main organisation working for the disaster victims, took out a rally holding placards to highlight various demands, including adequate compensation and the extradition of Anderson.

The rally from Yadgaar-e-shahjahani Park to the Union Carbide plant went through the cremation ground and the graveyard where victims were either cremated or buried.

Earlier, Chief Minister Digvijay Singh paid tributes to the gas leak victims and reiterated his government's commitment towards rehabilitation of those affected and providing the best possible medical facilities to them.

He said state-of-art equipment had been installed in the hospitals for gas victims, houses allotted to the next of kin of those killed and claim cases were being disposed of.
