Politicians to train women on how to win elections

Deepshika Ghosh in New Delhi

The Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party are coming together to coach women on how to win elections and become able leaders.

A step towards political empowerment of women, a three-day workshop organised by the Delhi Commission for Women in New Delhi from Saturday, will see senior politicians giving a crash course in 'leadership' to women.

Anjali Rai, chairperson of DCW, said the programme was organised with an eye on the municipal elections in Delhi, six months away.

"There is a 33 per cent reservation in municipal bodies, but the women candidates were not prepared the last time," Rai said.

True political empowerment comes from being well informed of one's rights, Rai said. "A party ticket is only the means but not the end."

At the event, the BJP's most familiar woman leader and Rajya Sabha MP, Sushma Swaraj, will share the forum with Congress MP Ambika Soni in a session on how to be a capable leader.

BJP MP Vijay Goel will talk on how to win elections

Amidst the political heavyweights stands out slimming expert Vandana Luthra, who has been enlisted to guide the aspirants on personality development, healthcare and diet!

Congress MP Margaret Alva, party secretary Mukul Wasnik and Delhi BJP president Mange Ram Garg will give lessons on how to woo voters and how to be a good speaker.

Delhi Chief Minister Shiela Dikshit, her finance minister M S Saathi and party colleague Jairam Ramesh will also participate in the workshop.
