DMK rally ends, no untoward incident

Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam workers on Sunday took out a procession led by party youth wing leader and Madras mayor M K Stalin in the city, condemning the 'police high-handedness' during the arrest of party president and former chief minister M Karunanidhi.

Party workers from across the state had started arriving in the city since Saturday for the procession, which culminated in a public meeting at the Seerani Arangam on the Marina beach.

Police had made unprecedented security arrangements, with over 15,000 police personnel deployed for duty. Water cannons and teargas launchers were positioned at vulnerable locations.

However, no city police official was seen on active duty. Senior officers drawn from other districts were overseeing the march.

The processionists, including volunteers from the DMK youth wing, lawyers' wing and the women's wing, shouted slogans against city police commissioner K Muthu Karuppan and charged him with carrying out the arrests of Karunanidhi and two Union ministers - Murasoli Maran and T R Baalu - at the behest of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa.

They also raised slogans against the 'dictatorial' rule of the Jayalalithaa government.

Vehicular traffic was diverted at many places, while the metropolitan transport corporation maintained skeletal bus services in view of the procession. Shops, hotels and business establishments on the route of the procession remained closed.
