China, Pak ink deals on Gwadar sea port project

Close allies China and Pakistan on Friday signed three agreements on the construction of a strategic deep sea port project in southern Pakistan.

The multi-billion dollar Gwadar deep sea port project would be a symbol of 50 years of diplomatic ties between the two neighbouring countries, official sources said.

The agreement was signed between Chinese Minister of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation Shi Guangsheng and visiting Pakistan Minister of Finance Shaukat Aziz, the sources said.

Details of the project and how it would be financed were not disclosed.

The two sides decided on the project when Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji visited Pakistan last May.

The Gwadar port project will benefit Pakistan's economic and social sector, the sources said, but denied that it had a strategic angle as well.
