The historic Red Fort has been made out of bounds for the general public from Wednesday in the run up to the Independence Day celebrations in view of the threats emanating from various militant outfits operating in Jammu and Kashmir.
Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee is to address the nation from the ramparts of the Red Fort on August 15.
Joint Commissioner of Police (nothern range) Ajay Chadha told newspersons on Wednesday morning that the decision was taken after assessing inputs from intelligence agencies and the threat from militant outfits.
Up to 10,000 police personnel are to be deployed during the I-Day celebrations in the Capital.
Security has also been tightened at the Delhi, Jammu, Srinagar and Amritsar airports.
"The security has been tightened in the wake of stepped up militant activities in J&K after the failure of the Agra summit," Minister for Civil Aviation Sharad Yadav told newspersons.
