Dawood aide & Bombay blasts suspect held in Calcutta

In a pre-dawn operation, Calcutta police on early Thursday morning arrested Abdul Ghaffar Ghani, a close associate of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim, who is also wanted in connection with the 1993 Bombay serial bomb blasts.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Banibrata Basu said the city police made the arrest from Chitpur lock-gate area on a tip-off.

Basu said Ghani was eluding police dragnet and was hiding at a Dum Dum residence near Calcutta for about one and a half years.

He said Ghani, a professional killer, had a direct hand in the Bombay bomb blasts at the instance of Dawood and was charged with committing several murders and other offences.

"He had fled to Dubai after the Bombay blasts and had since been eluding police dragnet," he said.

Basu said the city police were tipped off by Bombay police sleuths that Ghani had been hiding in Calcutta.
