Congress demands Advani's resignation

The Congress party on Wednesday demanded the resignation of Union Home Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani for the recent massacres by terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir.

Briefing reporters in Parliament on his party's stand on the killings, Congress spokesman S Jaipal Reddy said, "Advani has demonstrated more than adequately his incapacity as an administrator."

"We will demand Advani's resignation in the Lok Sabha on Thursday when he makes a statement in the House regarding the government's strategy in J&K," he said.

Reddy said that after the Agra summit, the Congress had asked the Vajpayee government 'to exercise vigilance and increase security in J&K'.

He said Tuesday's massacre in Jammu railway station was 'absolutely shocking' and a reflection of the Centre's incapacity to meet the 'aggravated situation' in the state.

Reddy said the home minister on Wednesday had sought to "pass the buck" for the killings on Chief Minister Dr Farooq Abdullah.

"We recognise that law and order is a state subject, but Abdullah has been fully cooperating with the security forces and the Ministry of Home Affairs," he said,

"The home minister cannot escape responsibility. The nation is convulsed by what is happening in J&K," he pointed out.
