Fiji Election: Party backs Mahendra Chaudhry

Shailendra Singh in Suva

Fiji's Labour Party has said former prime minister Mahendra Chaudhry would be the party's prime ministerial candidate despite warnings of bloodshed if he returns to office.

Party spokesperson Jokapeci Koroi, responding to a letter that has been circulating around threatening bloodshed if Labour wins, said the party would never bow to threats.

The general election is to be held in Fiji late this month.

Police are investigating a letter that said: "A vote for Chaudhry is a vote for bloodshed."

The situation in Fiji is tense. As the election approaches, various ethnic Fijian nationalist parties have openly talked of a revolt if Chaudhry is returned to power.

Even Tupeni Baba, Chaudhry's former deputy who has formed his New Labour Party, has warned there could be another coup if he is made prime minister.

Political observers believe Labour would again emerge as the single largest party in the 71-member house due to its rural support base.
