Bihar flood situation improving

The flood situation in Bihar showed signs of improvement Tuesday as all major rivers were receding except the Burhi Gandak, official sources said.

Central Water Commission sources said the Burhi Gandak is rising at Samastipur and has crossed the danger mark by 10 cm. Rivers like the Ganga, the Gandak, the Bagmati and the Punpun are receding, while the water level of the Kosi was constant.

The Ganga is flowing below the danger level all along its course in Bihar, while there was a fall in the water level of the Bagmati though it continued to be above the danger mark by 61 cm at Benibad and by three cm at Hayaghat, the sources said.

The water level of the Kosi was constant, but was 102 cm and 50 cm above the danger mark at Baltara and Kursela respectively. The Gandak was flowing below the danger mark all along its course in the state, they said.

State rehabilitation and relief department sources said the relief operations are going on on a war-footing following Chief Minister Rabri Devi's directive. She is likely to call an all-party meeting Wednesday to discuss measures to step up relief operations in the flood-hit areas and assess the drought-like situation prevailing in some parts of the state.

The flood had so far damaged around 22,000 houses and standing crops worth about Rs 110 million, they said.

State water resources spokesman said all major embankments are safe and operations are on to prevent any breach.
