Chinese leaders to discuss Sino-Indian ties

Anil K Joseph in Beijing

Sino-Indian relations are likely to be discussed among other international and domestic issues at the annual conclave of China's top leadership beginning Monday.

"Sino-Indian relations are expected to figure when the leadership reviews world affairs and China's ties with its neighbouring countries at the North China seaside resort Beidaihe," analysts said.

They said Sino-US relations and the scheduled China visit of US President George W Bush in October would be high on the foreign policy agenda.

The meeting may also discuss Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji's plans to visit India later this year and how to work towards a 'constructive and cooperative relationship' with New Delhi, they said.

On the domestic front, the leaders will discuss the state of the nation and future plans, especially China's imminent entry into the World Trade Organisation and its impact on various sectors of the economy.

Zhu is expected to present plans to sustain an eight per cent growth of the Chinese economy in the face of a global economic slowdown.

Earlier Monday Chinese leader and chairman of the standing committee of the National People's Congress, Li Peng met former prime minister H D Deve Gowda in Beidaihe.
