Three killed in police firing in Bihar

Soroor Ahmed in Patna

Three persons were killed and nine injured on Monday morning in police firing in Aurai block of Muzaffarpur district in Bihar, which has been affected by floods.

The incident occurred when people assembled outside Aurai police station to protest against the lathicharge during relief and rescue operations on Sunday evening.

On Sunday, people became restless while relief supplies were being distributed in flood-affected areas, leading to chaos. Police had to resort to a lathicharge to control the situation.

Following this, an agitated mob torched the Aurai police station forcing the police to react.

Police officials said they fired in self-defence and that no one was injured in the incident.

However, Ganesh Prasad Yadav, Janata Dal (U) MLA who represents Aurai, told rediff.com, "Six people were killed in the firing."

Later, three deaths were confirmed.

Yadav also charged the local administration with mismanagement in the relief work.

The floods have left a dozen persons dead and, at present, 30 of the 37 districts in the state are affected.

The worst affected districts are Gopalganj (home district of Chief Minister Rabri Devi), East and West Champaran, Saran and Sitamarhi.

Army helicopters and mechanized motorboats are carrying out relief work.

However, the government is facing accusations of focusing only on Gopalganj district, ignoring the others.
