Punjab seeks to extradite terrorist from Canada

The Punjab police is seeking to extradite from Canada a criminal turned terrorist who has been on the run for more than 20 years.

The police request for the return of Malkiat Singh, alias Meeta, has been conveyed to the Canadian authorities along with his fingerprints and photograph, official sources said.

A resident of Ludhiana, 100 km from Chandigarh, Meeta was allegedly involved in a number of criminal and terrorist activities.

Though the police failed to gather substantial evidence against him in most cases, his extradition is being sought in a 1974 murder case in which he was sentenced to life imprisonment.

According to the police, Meeta and five accomplices attacked a family in his village on March 25, 1974, and gunned down a man, Teja Singh.

Meeta challenged his life sentence in the Punjab and Haryana high court and secured bail on April 11, 1978. The police said though his bail was cancelled after five months, Meeta went into hiding and reportedly took to terrorism.
