Alka Yagnik Plans 9-City US Tour

Som Chivukula

Alka Yagnik Last September, singer Alka Yagnik, performing with singer and entertainer Sudesh Bhosle, wowed a crowd of 5,000 in San Francisco.

But the rest of the country did not see the duo perform. Yagnik and Bhosle were on a special trip to the Bay Area, performing at the annual conference of the Leuva Patidar Samaj.

This summer, Yagnik is back in America -- but without Bhosle. Yagnik and singer Babul Supriyo will embark on a 9-city tour beginning next weekend in Boston.

"Alka is very familiar to people who watch movies and listen to songs," national promoter Yash Pal Soi, said. "She is the hottest thing in India right now, having won four Filmfare awards."

Yagnik, who began her career in 1980 with Hum Tum Rahega Akele Wahan in Hamari Bahu Alka, has won acclaim for her numbers in such films as Taal (Taal Se Taal Mila) and the title song from Kuch Kuch Hota Hai.

"This concert series will be a nostalgic one," Soi, who has been a promoter for nearly 30 years, noted. "There will be a lot of romantic songs."

Supriyo has primarily sung for superstar Hrithik Roshan and Abhishek Bachchan, and has several hit numbers to his credit from films such as Kaho Naa Pyar Hai, Dhai Akshar Prem Ke and Chori Chori Chupke Chupke.

The tour comes at a time when the hit play Purush (starring Nana Patekar and Ayesha Jhulka) is also slated to hit the stage in America.

But Soi is not concerned.

"We welcome Purush," he said. "These are two shows and the public is used to it during this time of the year. So I don't think we are going to affect each other."
