Bahuguna continues fast, terms arrest illegal

Eminent environmentalist Sunderlal Bahuguna continued his indefinite fast for the third day on Thursday following his arrest over the Tehri dam issue and alleged that he had been illegally arrested.

"My arrest is totally illegal which is a violation of the fundamental rights, including the right to freedom enshrined in the Constitution,'' Bahugna said in a letter to the district authorities.

"I was only informed orally by the police personnel about my arrest, no warrant was shown to me," Bahuguna said.

However, Tehri Garhwal District Magistrate Radha Raturi denied Bahaguna's charges saying under Section 151 of the CrPC, there was no need to issue an arrest warrant while taking a person into custody.

Meanwhile construction work on the 2400 mw project continued in full swing for the fourth day following Bahuguna's arrest.

Bahuguna said the dam, being constructed at the highly seismic zone could 'create a big disaster' in the area.

He claimed that in case of a disaster, areas like Haridwar, Rishikesh and even Bulandshahr could get submerged.

He termed his arrest as a 'big blot' in his 61 years of public life.
