BSF opens fire to repulse BDR

Border Security Force personnel opened fire following an attempt by the Bangladesh Rifles to occupy a border outpost in Karimganj district of Assam on Monday, BSF DIG (G) S Basumatary said Tuesday.

"BDR personnel along with people in plain clothes, who could be villagers, advanced on the Lathitilla border outpost in the district," Basumatary said.

Challenged by the BSF, the BDR and others beat a hasty retreat, the DIG said.

The DIG said a maximum alert was sounded along all the outposts on the 1286 km Indo-Bangla border in the Tripura-Cachar-Mizoram area after the BDR's bid.

The strength of the forces was increased at Muhurichar in Belonia sub-division of South Tripura district, where the BSF and BDR had exchanged fire on a number of occasions over occupation of Char land, he added.
