Kailash pilgrimage to
commence on May 30

The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra 2001 will commence on May 30 and about 560 yatris are expected to participate in the pilgrimage to the abode of Lord Shiva in the Chinese Himalayas this year.

The yatris would be sent in 16 batches of 35 each and the total duration of the pilgrimage would be 27 days, with 17 days on the Indian side and ten days on the Chinese side, official sources said.

The pilgrims would be selected in a transparent manner through a computer generated random selection process.

The yatra starts from Delhi and the pilgrims are taken to Mangti via Kathgodam by bus. The yatris trek from Mangti to Lipulekh pass on the Indian side while on the Chinese side, the Kailash parikrama involves trekking approximately 60 kms climbing heights of up to 19,200 feet in three days.

The yatra will terminate on October 2, 2001.

Each yatri is required to pay Rs 11,000 to the Kumaon Mandal Vikas Nigam, which organises logistics on the Indian side and $600 to the Chinese authorities.
