Otherwise, go back to India and come back next year. The key to stay alive in this scenario is to be master in multiple technologies. If you are smart enough, you wont face much trouble finding another job. If you are new here without much experience, blame it on bad luck and go back to India. Dont screw up your chances with GC. You can ask your (Ex)company for airfare to India.

Views:Its interesting to see that there is so much disappoval in the Indian circuit of H1B's. there are two ways to look at the situation. i'm not a political science major but the impact of recession is not much a a hallmark of any text book now. For those who are thinking a possible recession is bound to occur, wake up!!You're living in recession. If you think 400,000 layoffs is not recession, you're idea of recession needs significant honing. There's the indian economy super-depleted ( well I might as well get credit for the new word)of any technocal talent. For the dream of Indian being a technology superpower, this is a positive signal.every programmer who did a computer course from 'down the street computer centre' imagined a new world of Honda, Sushi and Dsl. Go home and do your land some good. Its not that bad. Its frustrating but its not your country anyways. Its a act we should accept and the sooner we accept it , the better we'll fare emotionally. I'm not saying that the layoffs are justified but why is returning to India the biggest nightmare to deal with?? For everyone, who never learnt to broaden perspectives to the world, I say I wish you stay long enough to learn that your place India is precious too. late night cereal dinnner, stressfull working hours, job insecurity, constant fear of INS and visa issues, desperation for a green card, only weekend talks to mom shouldn't last forever, anyways. You deserve more secirity in life. Go where you get it, even if that means home sweet home.

Views:Hello All It is no secret that H1-B Visa holders get the boot first, when tech. companies downsize. It has been the trend historically in US, during economic uncertainties. The bright side is, they depend on qualified immigrants. How do you define a qualified immigrant. Somehow, over the years Indian engineers with Master's degrees in US Univerisites are much more accepted by the American society in general when it comes to communication skills, technical adequacy and feeling of not being dumped with cheap labor from other countries. So, my advise for the laidoff Indians - Regsiter fro Master's degre programs in Computer Scoence or Electrical engineering or the like and use the downturn to your advantage. For when the economy recovers, they'll absorb you in no time. Else, you'll have to stay put with job specific skills whcih are not amortizable even over a two year period. Ravi Balakrishnan

We have seen the greener side. We have to taste the bitter side of it now. I have no complaints.

Views:At its root, the H1B community should be considering this issue as a civil rights issue. Take an example, I paid for unemployment insurance. When I got in touch with EDD for my claim, they were nice enough to pay my first claim but they said I will have to return the money should the INS decide that I don't have status. My question is how can you be asked to pay unemployment premium for a service that you cannot claim if you have to leave the country. Some people it seems are created more equal than others--this is a clear case of human rights violation and should be taken to US Supreme Court for resolution. We have to demand temporary resident status and have the full rights for the duration of time the visa is granted including unemployment benefits. Anybody willing to join the fight? I am gathering material for an article on the legal anamolies of H1B visa. PLease send information on your experiences.

The H-1B visa holders need to retrian themselves and prepare themselves for new challenges in the futures, than to spend time sulking that their dream did not meet with reality (it seldom does). If they wish to return to their roots, be an entrepreneur of choose someother option, it is entirely upto them. The country (India) is behind them and ready to accept them if and when they choose to return.

Views:The US Government, INS, and the companies would all say they don't know what the fuss is all about. By definition, the H1B is a temporary work visa. The people who were granted these visas to work in the US were fully cognizant of the implications of what the word "temporary" means, and still decided to accept these jobs and come to the US to work. The only unfair aspect of this is that employees on H1 visas pay social security taxes. That makes no sense.

Views:I've been on H1, L1, and currently on H1 since 1993, never applied for GC. Two times I went back to India for nearly a year. Based on my experience, here is my two cents (93 paisa). Most of us who came here and made lots of money, had we worked in any other field in India, it would have been unthinkable. We should be thankful for that, instead of thinking how much more you could have earned by staying. Most of the jobs that were trimmed recently were created in the dotcom boom of 1998-2000, the boom got burst, so did the jobs. When there is a sudden rise in demand, one can easily predict a peak and then the fall. Most of the jobs were created by dotcom companies that were created with flawed business models. Companies running with negative profits for years; it was only a question of time before this would collapse. Most H1-Bs who came during the boom mistakenly assumed this will go on forever. Many of them invested heavily into furnishing, multiple cars, even houses while on H1. After watching the H1 scene for 8 years, I would say go easy on non-liquid assets (things you can't take to India) until you obtain a GC. When you are on H1, be like a water drop on a lotus leaf, be ready to leave the leaf(US) when the leaf bends. Don't get too hung-up over things you'll have to leave back, anticipate the market conditions. That way going back won't be a painful thing. Nobody forced you to come here, you took a calculated risk in coming to a foreign land, so deal with the risk. America doesn't owe us anything, it is the most sought after immigration destination in the world, for both legal and illegal immigrants. Just because we entered legally, we have to no right to demand rights to stay when the demand has dried up.

Views:I see lots of you complaining about social security benefits you'll never receive. Well, here is what I know. I think this holds good for everybody, H1B, GC or citizen. For every tax year where you earn more than $7000 taxable income, you get 4 credits. Once you reach 28 credits, you'll qualify for disablility benefits. Once you obtain 40 credits (takes 10 years), you are eligible to recieve social security retirement benefits. When you are 65 or 67, you will start receiving your monthly SS payments irrespective of which part of the world you live. If I can hold on to my H1 job till next year, I'll get my 40th credit. However, when I reach 67 after 35 years, the SS system would probably be dismantled due to lack of funds, simply because the number beneficiaries will far exceed the SS payers. Hence, nobody will get any money, so take comfort in that thought.

For long I have been proud of my fellow Indian professionals, who by many accounts have made an outstanding contribution to the development of the new economy. However yesterday after reading some of the messages, I was very disappointed and for once felt embarrassed of being an Indian. The most awful and disgraceful messages were those which screamed "We have been treated unfairly" or "The US Govt should come out with a solution to help laid off H-1 workers". These statements are absolutely ridiculous and cowardly. If indeed you were a true professional you would never say such things. Good talent, backed by good training and solid experience always stands out, no matter what the state of the economy. Friends, let us not forget that we were direct beneficiaries of the US economic boom. Imagine a boom that was so powerful that it was creating near equal wealth and job opportunities for a person graduating out of MIT/Harvard as it was for a "software consultant" born and raised in some remote corner of Andhra Pradesh. Understandably no one was complaining then. Now the economy is no longer booming, we cannot expect such insane wealth and job creation. It is time to reset expectations; change priorities and yes perhaps change countries of residence. The truth is my friends, that we Indians are a bunch of talented and hardworking people. These talents however always get defeated and repressed by our greater (disabilities of being extremely insecure, having low confidence and self esteem and have little if any faith in ourselves. Had it not been for all this, I bet no Indian professional worth his/her salt would even bother to make absurd demands from the US govt or criticize the US system. Let's not blame the system folks, lets blame ourselves. Lets not forget that we got greedy. We came here because we saw op

Their home country is a land of opportunities and they would really be doing an honourable deed by coming dowm to their home country and serving their mother land. It is rather disgraceful to spend ones entire life as a second citizen. Money makes a ghost out of you and it is this maddening lust for money which makes our Indians go to the USA and make a Big Fool out of themselves. If you have it in you then come back and serve your mother country which can turn out to be the super power of the millenium and then it would be those whites who would be wanting to come to a country which is full of cultures and dignified traditions as they themselves lack these basic ingredients.

It was a good opportunity forIndians but people who ahve recently went to US were going just b'cos of craziness for American dreams & burnt their fingers. It would have been great if Indians stay back & rule the world by dominating the market. But I don't see as many openings as to accomadate no of people on bench or got fired. Seeing current US economy condition we are not sure about when the things will be alright. In such conditions i think it's a wise decision to go back to India rather than staying here and spending the money earned. Also some are blaming USA that they used us when they need and sending back when they don't need. Probably these guys forgot what USA has given to them. Yes I am talking about money. Views:It is very bad that usa kicked of lot of peoples. But we are also responsible for all this.Peoples are going mad for computer every one are opting for computer whether it is civil enggineer or any type of engineer.Whether he has so skills or not.all peoples are the part of this rat race. This is the major reason,so that usa think that one day ,Indians will dominant the conntry. And if we think fro our side there is nothing to worry,no ression will come.I am agree that usa is a major country from which e are getting business, but now countries from all over the world are opening there doors for indians. So there is nothing to worry.

Views:Hi Almost everyone who is in USA fear that may be thid is the ;at day that they are ging for job . Many many people have been laid off .One of my Pakistani friend who is USA citizan has two children has been laid off and his condition is very poor . I being from TCS is still working on L1 .I think that small body shoppers have been the worst hit .So far TCS has not laid off any one and our project has been going smoothly .The reason may be because we are in maintainance project and the company has to run those project to keep the company running and also most of the TCSers are in telecom and other company but not in dot com comapnies . I think all the people who have been laid off should learn oracle admin ,unix admin ,networking and they should be able to find a job . Thanks Arvind USA

Views:i think that the slowdown in the I.T. field specially in u.s. is not taken long time, because according to NASSCOM there the jiant company, in the india are not fear to that slow-down, but 138 out of 140 are aspect groth in the present fiscal year...and the prediction say also that till the year 2008 the software exports of the india is increases to the third part of the total exports in the world.. !!!!. so, i strongly believe that this is for sort time only. but, india is the safest place in the i.t. field as ** About the security of the job of the remaining i think that not so much secure in u.s.
